SIL Bangladesh
SIL Bangladesh’s Ethnodev unit is dedicated to helping ethno linguistic communities throughout Bangladesh to use their own languages and cultures as a way to celebrate their identity and to achieve their development goals. Ethnodev envisages a healthy, literate and diverse Bangladesh in which every ethno linguistic community is contributing to a strong civil society. Participating in partnership oriented relief efforts for ethno linguistic communities in need is an essential part of helping those communities achieve their development goals. Ethnodev is committed to seeing that its relief efforts build towards a long-term empowerment relationship with communities.
November 2007 – Cyclone Sidr Damage
Late at night on November 15, 2007, a Category 5 cyclone (named “Sidr) struck Bangladesh causing significant damage to parts of the country - especially in hard to reach villages in its south-western regions. 3000 people are confirmed dead with estimates now ranging up to 10.000.
Ethnodev Relief Effort - Goals
Ethnodev’s immediate goals in its relief effort are to: a) assist Rakhine communities and their neighbours in access to food and non-food aid of immediate urgency; b) assist Rakhine communities and their neighbours in restoring their consistent access to clean water sources; c) assist Rakhine communities and their neighbours in re-establishing their long term housing and livelihoods. Ethnodev’s medium to long term goals in this effort are to establish relationships directly with the Rakhine community and between the Rakhine community and its partners in order to help the Rakhine community organize itself to achieve its development goals while retaining its language and cultural identity in positive relations with neighbouring communities.
Rakhine People
The Rakhine people of Myanmar are also known as Arakanese to the British, Yakine to the Burmese, and Mohg (means Pirate) to Muslims, living along the Rakhine border of Bangladesh. Rakhine are of Mongoloid decent whose ancestors may have migrated from the direction of Nepal. They are an ancient people who have mixed with other ethnicities but still retain a distinctive national identity through their language and culture. Rakhine is the primary language. Theravada Buddhism is the main religion. There exists a large amount of evidence that Rakhine was more religiously diverse in the past as well as more connected to the outside world.
